THE IDEA IN BRIEF
Many leaders are promoted into leadership roles without a lot of ongoing support. A lucky minority are invited to experiential classroom style programs with great content, but the impact is lost within months as participants aren’t supported long enough on a day to day basis to really build new skills and break old habits. The Kemp Street Partners’ New Leaders Program starts with three short workshops to introduce skills and concepts, but its success comes from the ongoing support offered to participants through peer group coaching. It is in these small groups that lasting capability is built.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The format is designed to be highly interactive, offering both leading edge thinking and practical techniques that can be implemented and practised immediately. A one-hour orientation session is followed by three 2-hour workshops over three weeks, and then six 90-minute Peer Learning Group Meetings over the following 5-6 months to practise, hone and embed the skills taught.
The program is capped at 24 participants, but can be run with groups as small as 12. Optional 1:1 coaching is available at an additional cost.
- Content covered includes:
- Understanding leadership and the impact of various leadership approaches
- The underpinning foundational skills of compassion, curiosity, listening, questioning, avoiding assumptions, and understand behavioural triggers
- Trust and boundary setting
- The perils of giving advice
- Impactful influencing
- Receiving, soliciting and providing feedback
- Coaching for empowering others
- A Learning Journal is provided, containing all the content with spaces for exercises and reflection.
- Peer Group Meetings (groups of three hosted by a Kemp Street Partners’ coach) to reflect, share insights and gain valuable additional perspectives, and help people commit to action.
- 1:1 meetings with the participant’s leader before and after the program are encouraged to ensure alignment on objectives and support the embedding of new behaviours.
- Optional additional reading is provided for those interested in a ‘deeper dive’ into the content.
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS PROGRAM?
At this stage, this is a private program, although this is under review; it is designed for people new to leadership in a single organisation across multiple business areas and/or geographies, and suits leaders keen to build their leadership capability and maximise the performance of those they lead. Participants can be from any sector: Corporate, Private, Professional Services, Not-for-Profit, Education, Government etc., and are either about to become a first time leader or are still relatively new in their leadership role (e.g. less than six months).
